Massage Therapy

Questions, Answers, and Solutions

The Covenant team is excited to welcome back a familiar face, Marie Rosario, in her new role as a Licensed Massage Therapist. Marie started with Covenant a few years ago as part of our front desk team. Marie’s cheerful and chatty attitude was an asset that provided a welcoming and helpful environment for our patients and their families. It was clear from the beginning that Marie was destined for bigger things, and when she told us she was leaving Covenant to go to massage school, we had an inkling we had not seen the last of her. When she reached out and said and told us she was finishing her program with flying colors we knew it was time for Marie to come back home to Covenant. So please join us as we welcome Marie back to Covenant as our in-house Licensed Massage Therapist. We look forward to her bringing her commitment and passion for health and wellness through her massage work. She will be offering Swedish Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, and Prenatal massage, with plans to add additional massage modalities in the future. Call the office at 573-635-6217 and get yourself scheduled today.

The Benefits of Massage Therapy

Massage can allow the body to respond faster and more fully to chiropractic adjustments. This therapy also helps maintain alignment for longer periods of time. By helping to strengthen the muscles, once the musculoskeletal system is properly aligned, your body can "reset" and allow this improved physical state to become the norm rather than the exception.

Massage and chiropractic care enhance emotional well-being and proper, natural physical functionality. Pain relief can become more profound and long-lasting, and when you follow the recommended regimen, these treatments can help prevent your pain from returning.

Massage therapy releases muscle tension, promotes good sleep, and increases overall feelings of wellness. Both chiropractic care and massage therapy have excellent outcomes for wellness in terms of mental health and well-being, as well as pain and musculoskeletal conditions.

Swedish Massage

Indulge in the ultimate relaxation experience with our Swedish massage therapy. Originating in Sweden, this soothing technique focuses on gentle, flowing strokes to melt away tension and promote overall relaxation. Our skilled therapists employ various techniques, including kneading, tapping, and long, gliding strokes, designed to improve circulation, reduce stress, and enhance your well-being. Whether you're seeking relief from everyday stress or simply craving a pampering escape, our Swedish massage offers the perfect blend of relaxation and rejuvenation.

Swedish massage is one of the most popular and widely practiced forms of massage therapy. It incorporates various techniques to promote relaxation, reduce muscle tension, and improve overall well-being.

Key Features of Swedish Massage

  • Effleurage: This is a long, gliding stroke that covers broad areas of the body. Effleurage helps to warm up the muscles, increase circulation, and relax the recipient.
  • Petrissage: Petrissage involves kneading, rolling, and squeezing the muscles. It helps to release tension in the muscles, improve flexibility, and promote better circulation.
  • Friction: Friction involves deep, circular movements applied with the fingertips or thumbs. It targets specific areas of muscle tension or adhesions, helping to break them down and improve mobility.
  • Tapotement: Tapotement consists of rhythmic tapping, pounding, or chopping movements. It stimulates the muscles, invigorates the body, and can help relieve tension and soreness.
  • Vibration: Vibration involves shaking or vibrating movements applied to the body. It can help relax tight muscles, improve circulation, and reduce stress.
  • Gentle Stretching: Swedish massage often incorporates gentle stretching movements to improve flexibility and range of motion in the joints.

Benefits of Swedish Massage

  • Relaxation: Swedish massage is known for its deeply relaxing effects on the body and mind. The gentle, rhythmic strokes help to calm the nervous system, reduce stress hormones, and promote a sense of well-being.
  • Pain Relief: The various techniques used in Swedish massage can help alleviate muscle tension, stiffness, and soreness. It can be particularly beneficial for individuals experiencing chronic pain conditions or muscular imbalances.
  • Improved Circulation: The combination of long, flowing strokes and kneading movements in Swedish massage helps to enhance blood flow throughout the body. This can promote better oxygenation of tissues, removal of metabolic waste products, and overall cardiovascular health.
  • Stress Reduction: Swedish massage has been shown to reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol while increasing the release of feel-good hormones such as serotonin and dopamine. This can help combat the negative effects of stress on both the body and mind.
  • Enhanced Flexibility: The stretching and kneading movements in Swedish massage can help improve flexibility and range of motion in the joints, making it beneficial for athletes or individuals with limited mobility.
  • Improved Sleep Quality: Many people find that Swedish massage promotes better sleep by inducing a state of deep relaxation and reducing insomnia or sleep disturbances.

Overall, Swedish massage offers a holistic approach to wellness by addressing both physical and emotional aspects of health. Whether you're looking to unwind, relieve muscle tension, or simply pamper yourself, Swedish massage can be a valuable tool for promoting overall well-being.

Deep Tissue Massage

Experience profound relief and targeted healing with our deep-tissue massage therapy. Ideal for those seeking relief from chronic pain or muscle tension, deep tissue massage goes beyond the surface to address underlying issues and promote lasting relaxation. Our skilled therapists utilize firm pressure and slow strokes to penetrate deep layers of muscle and connective tissue, releasing stubborn knots and restoring mobility. Whether you're recovering from injury or simply seeking deep relaxation, our deep tissue massage is tailored to your specific needs, leaving you feeling revitalized, rejuvenated, and ready to tackle life's challenges with ease.

Deep tissue massage is a therapeutic massage technique that focuses on the deeper layers of muscles and connective tissues. It employs firm pressure and slow strokes to target specific areas of tension and discomfort.

Key Features of Deep Tissue Massage

  • Focused Pressure: Deep tissue massage applies concentrated pressure to release chronic tension and knots in the muscles, fascia, and tendons. Therapists use their fingers, thumbs, fists, or elbows to reach deep layers of tissue.
  • Slow Strokes: Unlike Swedish massage, which uses long, flowing strokes, deep tissue massage involves slower movements to penetrate deeper layers of muscle tissue effectively.
  • Friction Techniques: Deep tissue massage may include friction techniques, such as stripping or cross-fiber friction, to break up adhesions and scar tissue, improving mobility and flexibility.
  • Trigger Point Therapy: Therapists may target specific trigger points—localized areas of muscle tension that can refer pain to other parts of the body—to alleviate discomfort and restore muscle function.
  • Stretching: Deep tissue massage may incorporate passive stretching to lengthen muscles, improve range of motion, and enhance flexibility.

Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage

  • Pain Relief: Deep tissue massage can effectively relieve chronic pain conditions, such as lower back pain, neck and shoulder tension, sciatica, and fibromyalgia. By releasing tension and reducing inflammation, it promotes pain relief and relaxation.
  • Muscle Rehabilitation: Athletes and individuals recovering from injuries or surgeries often benefit from deep tissue massage to rehabilitate muscles, break down scar tissue, and improve tissue elasticity.
  • Improved Posture: Deep tissue massage helps realign muscle fibers and release tightness in muscles and fascia, which can improve posture and reduce strain on joints and ligaments.
  • Increased Range of Motion: By targeting deep layers of muscle tissue, deep tissue massage can enhance flexibility and range of motion, allowing for better movement and performance in daily activities and sports.
  • Stress Reduction: Deep tissue massage stimulates the release of endorphins—natural painkillers and mood elevators—promoting relaxation and reducing stress levels.
  • Enhanced Circulation: The firm pressure applied during deep tissue massage helps improve blood circulation, delivering oxygen and nutrients to tissues while removing toxins and metabolic waste products.
  • Better Sleep: Deep tissue massage can promote better sleep quality by inducing relaxation, reducing muscle tension, and alleviating stress and anxiety.
  • Scar Tissue Reduction: Deep tissue massage can break down scar tissue from injuries or surgeries, improving tissue healing and reducing the risk of adhesions and restrictions.

Overall, deep tissue massage offers a therapeutic approach to addressing chronic pain, muscle tension, and mobility issues, promoting physical healing and relaxation for improved well-being.

Prenatal Massage

*Prenatal massage therapy requires a doctor's permission in the first trimester of pregnancy.

Prenatal massage therapy is a specialized form of massage tailored specifically to the needs of pregnant women. It is designed to provide physical and emotional support during pregnancy, addressing the unique discomforts and changes that occur in a woman's body during this transformative time.

The primary goals of prenatal massage therapy are to alleviate physical discomfort, promote relaxation, and enhance overall well-being for both the mother and the unborn child. This type of massage is typically performed by trained therapists who understand the anatomical and physiological changes that occur during pregnancy and can adapt their techniques accordingly.

Key Features of Prenatal Massage Therapy

  • Pain Relief: Pregnancy can cause various physical discomforts, such as back pain, joint pain, muscle tension, and swelling. Prenatal massage techniques can help alleviate these symptoms by targeting specific areas of tension and promoting relaxation.
  • Improved Circulation: Massage therapy can help improve blood circulation, which is essential for both the mother and the baby. Enhanced circulation can reduce swelling in the extremities and promote better delivery of nutrients and oxygen to the fetus.
  • Stress Reduction: Pregnancy can be a stressful time, both physically and emotionally. Prenatal massage provides a calming and nurturing experience that can help reduce stress and anxiety levels, promoting a sense of well-being for the mother.
  • Hormonal Regulation: Massage therapy has been shown to positively influence hormone levels, including reducing stress hormones such as cortisol and increasing the release of feel-good hormones like serotonin and dopamine. This hormonal balance can contribute to a more comfortable and emotionally stable pregnancy experience.
  • Preparation for Labor: Certain massage techniques used in prenatal massage therapy can help prepare the mother's body for labor and childbirth. These techniques focus on relaxing the pelvic muscles, promoting optimal fetal positioning, and reducing tension in the abdomen and lower back.
  • Bonding Experience: Prenatal massage provides an opportunity for expectant mothers to connect with their changing bodies and their growing baby. It can be a deeply nurturing and intimate experience that fosters a sense of connection and bonding between mother and child.
  • Safe and Gentle: Prenatal massage therapists are trained to use techniques that are safe and appropriate for pregnant women. They understand which areas of the body to avoid or approach with caution to ensure the safety and comfort of both the mother and the baby.

It's important for pregnant women to consult with their healthcare provider before starting any new wellness regimen, including prenatal massage therapy. However, for many expectant mothers, prenatal massage can be a valuable tool for promoting physical and emotional well-being throughout pregnancy.
